Local Area

The beautiful city of Lancaster sits in Lancashire, north-west of England, and is a lovely place to indulge a love of history, walk around or splash out with a bit of retail therapy. Situated just 45 minutes from the stunning Yorkshire Dales, it’s also a good location from which to head out into the countryside.

One of the city’s main attractions is Lancaster Castle, which stands tall to the north of the city. The origins of the castle date back almost 1,000 years, and the castle invites visitors to explore its dark but fascinating history.

Take trip to Lancaster Maritime Museum. Situated in the Port of Lancaster Customs House and overlooking the River Lune, this museum provides a revealing insight into the city’s seafaring past.

The Lancaster Canal is the ideal place for a quiet stroll. The canal stretches for 41 miles and as far as Kendal in the Lake District, Cumbria. The natural level of the canal allows other pursuits as well, such as canoeing.

Take a break from all the exploration and treat yourself to something expensive at one of Lancaster’s shopping centres. Two of the main places for shopping are St Nicholas’s Arcade — affectionately known as ‘St Nic’s’ — which features a range of high-street brands, and the Marketgate Shopping Centre.

Jump in the car and go for a drive to the Forest of Bowland, also commonly referred to as Bowland Fell. This official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) awaits you 50 minutes away from Lancaster. The open moorland and deep valleys of the ‘forest’ — the word is used in the sense of ‘old hunting ground’ — not to mention the fresh air inspire a genuine sense of calm.

If you’re staying in Lancaster, pack some hiking boots and seize the moment to visit the Yorkshire Dales. This popular countryside destination is only 45 minutes away. The scenery of the Dales and the different hiking trails and scrambling opportunities are your reward for making the short car journey.
